Sure Bets

Archie and Anthea.

If Teach Her had an All-Star team, these two young women would be on it.

They’re not starry-eyed kids dreaming of a chance to start. They both have already proven themselves worthy of support and have shown they can work hard and dream big.

Archie is going to be a lawyer. And yes, she was named after the comic book. Apparently, her mother liked the name, knew nothing about the cartoon character, and decided—boy or girl—to use it for her next child. Lucky Archie.

Though her abusive father abandoned the family many years ago and her mother faces a long list of health challenges now, Archie has worked hard, scoring 95% on the incredibly difficult CLAT exam, securing a place at one of the top government law colleges in India.

By tutoring for money in every available moment outside of school, she’s managed to scrape together enough to fund four of the five years her degree requires.

But the stress of this effort has taken its toll and now Archie has come to Teach Her to help fund her final year. Actually, she only asked for 42,500 rupees per semester…around $986 total…but if you add all of her expenses, room and board and a new laptop to boot, it comes to $2700. I say we bet big on this young woman.

And she already has a job lined up after graduation! Anyone want to support this kind of effort?

Anthea is a standout student in her own right, having already completed her undergraduate degree in marketing with distinction, often sending me report cards that were nothing but A+s. I have hundreds of pictures of her, but this moody black & white image is one of my favorites.

I remember when she was just starting to think about college, I asked her what she wanted to be. In all seriousness, she said, “I want to run my own company. You’ll see.”

Having been raised at the Good Shepherd Agricultural Mission, Anthea has dreams far beyond the Mission gates, now setting her sights on a 2-year Masters in Digital Marketing degree, a high-demand field in increasingly-online India and a must-have skill for anyone selling anything these days.

Best of all, she already has $3000/year committed for the next two years and only needs $2031 for Year One and $1357 for year two for a total of $3388. Anyone want to support this dream?

In the work we do, some students are riskier than others. Will they adjust to the rigors and social pressures of college life? Will they make it to graduation? Sometimes, we're not sure. We give them a chance, encourage as best we can, and hope for the best.

But Archie and Anthea are sure bets. Next year, Archie will graduate and start her law career. The following year, Anthea will graduate and take over the world.
